Books are part of everyone’s lives. We grow up with our paper friends. They inform us, they teach us, they entertain us. The books enliven our lives. In order to give special attention to books, April 23rd is observed as a world book day by UNESCO.
When books are put under attention, the authors should be honored too. Without the authors there would not have been any books. There have been numerous authors who wrote masterpieces that still inspire us and motivate us. William Shakespeare, Miguel Cevantes, Inca Garcilaso de la Vega are prominent writers who had two things in common. They wrote masterpieces and they died on the same date 23rd April. In 1995, UNESCO declared 23rd April as the world book day, this day is also celebrated as world copyright day as books are intellectual properties.
UNESCO observes this day to promote reading, publishing and copyright. Various countries in the world celebrate books on different days to propagate the love and respect for independent thoughts. Books are cultural and linguistic entities. Books represent cultural ethos and promote understanding amongst people. As per director general of UNESCO, books are written in a specific language and is intended for a specific linguistic audience. That specific books written for a specific linguistic and cultural audience is best appreciated in that very socio-cultural settings. This justifies the promotion of various linguistic expression to preserve diversity. This day is indeed a great opportunity to promote diversity and mutual understanding.
