Taiwan lies on the ring of fire. It sits on the convergent zone of various tectonic plates, the Euroasian plate, Yantze plate, Okinowa plate, the Philipino plate. This makes the island nation geologically active. Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are very common and not unnatural. Taiwan suffered at least 20 earthquakes since 1966.
Today, around noon earthquake of 6.7 on the richter scale struck on the east coast near the coastal city of Hualien in the afternoon. The buildings shook violently, and the people water pipes burst near the railway station. No casualties have been reported. The people were evacuated, and children nicely escorted out of schools. The train services were suspended. Tremors were reported even in the capital city of Tapei 115 Kilometers from the epicenter. A few hikers were injured due to falling rocks in the neighboring National Park.
